“Science gave me knowledge, but compassion gave me purpose — together, they shaped the journey of my life.”
When Varsha Tembe’s Journey looks back at her life, she sees not just the milestones, but the people whose lives have crossed paths with hers — in hospital corridors, research labs, classrooms, and community halls.
Her story began in India, where her love for science led her to study microbiology at the University of Pune. She was a dreamer with determination in her eyes, and soon her journey brought her to Australia. There, she earned her PhD at the University of Sydney and built a career as a scientific officer, researcher, and biobank manager. Alongside these roles, she also teaches ethics at a local primary school. In recognition of her dedication, she was honoured with the Harry Collins Award for Excellence in Consumer & Community Participation (2024). To many, these titles spoke of achievement, but to Varsha, they were simply steps on a larger path — one that connected knowledge to humanity.

Years of scientific research gave her insight into life at the cellular level. Yet what touched her most deeply were the people behind those samples and reports. She began to feel that while science healed the body, it was compassion that healed the soul. This belief led her to counselling — and in 2023, she proudly earned her Diploma in Counselling, ready to serve in a new way.

Today, Varsha is a counsellor at the Immigrant Women’s SpeakOut Association, where women come to her carrying the heavy silence of migration struggles, isolation, and personal battles. She offers them not just guidance but comfort — a safe space to be heard. “Science gave me knowledge, but service gave me meaning,” she says softly, and you can feel the truth of it in her presence.

But Varsha’s compassion has never been limited to her workplace. Over the years, she has worn many hats — community organiser, mentor, volunteer, leader, and an ethics teacher at a local primary school. She has volunteered her time with the Cancer Council, the Leukaemia Foundation, Hammondville Nursing Home, and many more. From transporting patients to supporting fundraising events, her heart for service has always been at the forefront.
She has also stepped into entrepreneurial spaces as a business partner with Shaadi Baraat & Co., bringing her creativity and leadership into the world of cultural events and celebrations. In addition, she proudly serves as a coach and Treasurer of Kho-Kho Australia, helping to grow and strengthen the presence of this traditional sport in the community.
As Justice of the Peace, Secretary of SAMA, Treasurer of Kho-Kho Australia, and committee member of AMSA, she has quietly built bridges across communities. From raising her voice on White Ribbon Day to mentoring South Asian women and teaching ethics to schoolchildren, her service is as diverse as it is impactful.

And yet, beyond the titles and roles, Varsha is someone who radiates empathy. She is the woman who will listen when no one else has time, who will stand up when others step back, and who will remind you, simply by example, that strength and kindness are not separate — they are one.
Varsha’s journey is proof that a meaningful life is not about choosing between science and service, career and community, knowledge and compassion. It is about weaving them together. She has done so with grace, reminding us all that the truest legacy we leave behind is not in what we achieve, but in the lives we uplift.
